Computers are complex machines that require many parts to run. To run well, all of those parts must stay in good repair, and that requires regular maintenance and the occasional replacement or upgrade. But you do not have to run out to the local computer repair store every time you need to have something fixed. You can be your own little IT department and take care of business at home, without the expensive labor fees on top of the parts fees!

Whats Your Computer Feeling Like?

One of the most important facets of computer repair, especially when it comes to computer parts, is keeping your computer cool. High temperatures can easily damage delicate computer components beyond repair, and depending on the part that is frying, it can take other parts out with it when it goes. For example, if your CPU begins to overheat too often and blows, it can damage the motherboard along with it. That means having to replace two components at the same time to get your computer up and running again.

You can keep your computer from overheating several ways. First, make sure the case on a desktop computer has adequate ventilation. Cooling fans are also necessary. Then make sure you keep it clean. The accumulation of dust, dirt and other debris can clog up the ventilation and cooling fans, and gum up the actual parts themselves, causing the computer to overheat. A can of condensed air will do well for blowing dust and dirt out of your computer. After cleaning out your computer, make sure all of the fans spin freely and easily. Any fans that stick or have slowed down, or you notice are making strange noises when running, should be replaced as soon as possible to stay on the safe side. If you use a laptop, get a laptop cooling bed to keep your laptop from overheating. These are usually USB powered devices that are flat, that the laptop rests on. Fans inside the cooling bed blow air up into the laptop from below, offering better ventilation and cooling. This is also handy if you like to use your laptop actually on your lap, as the heat won’t be uncomfortable on your legs.

When you are handling any of your computer’s inside components and parts, exercise caution against electrostatic discharge, which can damage parts easily. Wear an anti static wrist band and clip it to the case to prevent static damage. You should also make sure your hands are clean, especially when removing and replacing parts like RAM sticks, as skin oils can damage the parts, as well.

When you are learning how to repair computer parts, cooling, cleaning and safety are the top tips to be aware of so that everything goes well.

Every now and again, you will find yourself trying to delete a file only to be given an error message that says you are not allowed. “Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use,” says the error message. Or maybe it says, “This file is currently in use by another program.” It may tell you, “There has been a sharing violation,” or “The source or destination file may be in use,” or something similar. Whatever the exact message says will depend on your operating system and the specific problem that’s being caused, but the result is the same – you are trying to get rid of a file of some sort, and your system just refuses to let you do it.

This commonly happens with adware and spyware. These files appear to be undeleteable by any normal method of deletion. So if the file is in use and you can’t delete it, how do you get rid of it? Fortunately, there are a few ways you can go about getting rid of that nasty piece of work, and you do not need an IT degree or to pay an expensive computer technician down at the computer shop to do it!

If you are running Windows XP, you can remove the file manually. To do this, you first need to find the exact location to the file and its path. To find it, type the name of the undelete-able file into your Search box. To get to the Search box, go to the Start button, then Search, then All Files and Folders. Make sure the the “Look in” box shows the right drive, then click on Search to let your computer track the file down for you. Once it is located, right click on it and choose Properties. Make a note of the file location for your reference by writing it down somewhere.

Then close the search box. Click on Start, then Run, and type “CMD” without the quotation marks into the Run field. Hit Enter and wait for Command Prompt to open up. If you have any other programs open at this point, shut them all down, leaving Command Prompt open. Go back to Start, then Run, and type “taskmgr.exe” into the field, without the quotation marks. This will open your task manager. Click on the Proccesses tab, and then click on the process called Explorer.exe and end it.

Now head back to Command Prompt. Change to the directory where the offending file is located. To delete the file, type DEL <the filename>, where <the filename> is actually the file you want to get rid of. Now go back to the Task Manager, and click File, then New Task, then type “explorer.exe” without the quotation marks to start your Windows shell back up. Offending file is now gone and you have deleted the undelete-able!

Kurt Lang’s article is well organized, but also long so if you are just experiencing problems with fonts, here are some basic troubleshooting steps to take:

Run validations with Font Book

Launch Font Book and press command-A to select all fonts. Then from the “File” menu select “Validate Fonts” and wait for the results in the font validation window. Keep in mind that even though you may find minor problems with your current fonts, its best to follow the saying “if it’s not broken then don’t fix it”, and leave well-enough alone unless you’re experiencing problems.

Clear the font cache

In OS X, fonts are handled by the Apple Type Server process, which stores commonly used fonts in a cache for quick access. If there is corruption in this cache then you may experience a variety of troubles. To clear the cache, in pre-Leopard versions of OS X go to the /Macintosh HD/Library/Caches/ folder and remove the “com.apple.ATS” file. After doing this, restart the system.

For OS X 10.5 and later, you cannot easily access the user and global font caches, but you can use Apple’s “atsutil” terminal command to manage the ATS process. Open “Terminal” and enter the following commands to clear the user (or global) databases and restart the server:

atsutil databases -removeUser
atsutil server -shutdown
atsutil server -ping

NOTE: Use “sudo atsutil databases -remove” instead of the first command to remove the database for all users.

Avoid older font formats

If you can, avoid “.dfont” and “Type 1 PostScript” fonts. This suggestion may depend on the requirements for various programs, but if you have an older font suite that you are thinking about installing, it may run into problems with newer programs so you might consider getting an updated version of the suite before installing. Granted you can always try, but there is the potential that older font formats can cause problems so we recommend you stick to the more modern “.ttf” and “.ttc” fonts.

Manually clear out duplicates

Font Book has an option to “Resolve Duplicates” (available in the “Edit” menu), but this is limited in functionality and may not remove the specific font duplicate which you desire to remove. As such, the best approach to managing duplicate fonts is to do it manually (tedious, but effective if done correctly). In Font Book, you can use the “Show Font info” option (command-I) to see information about a selected font, and especially where the font is located on your system. Doing this for your duplicate fonts will allow you to select which one to remove, either by removing it from its font folder, or by right-clicking it and selecting “Disable”.
